COPA LIBERTADORES

Santos of Brazil have been heavily supported for their away, Copa Libertadores match, against Blooming of Bolivia and it is easy to see why.

The odds have tumbled on the asian lines from -1/2 ball 1.72, to -3/4 ball 1.78.

The Brazilians are taking the match seriously and rested players for their last league start, where they are (5-0-0), ahead of this fixture.

Blooming look a couple of classes below the visitors and have, at least 3, key players missing. They play at Santa Cruz which is 416m above sea level, so no altitude problems, there has been talk of some monsoon like conditions in the area, which would have been a great "leveller", but I just got a local forecast, which only predicted light rain.

This looks like an away win.

As I write some acceptable odds are still on offer, they are in order, 1.75 Win United, 1.70 Interwetten, 1.72 Betfair and 1.68 Centrebet. Suggest you shop around and take the best you can find. I will put the bet up with the exchange, as that is available to more readers.

4 points Santos -1/2 ball 1.72 Betfair.

Good Luck.

ASIAN MARKET MOVES ...........

Further support for two teams this afternoon..........

French Cup LENS -3/4 ball 1.92 ........... down to 1.71
Premiership BOLTON WANDERERS -1 ball 2.15 .............. 1.91

I will be back very shortly, with some late information.

Check back.

ROBINS V ROBINS

No, not bird racing, but a West Country derby from Ashton Gate, featuring Bristol City ( The Robins) against local rivals Cheltenham Town ( The Robins). No prizes for originality there !

City are in fine form, on an 18 match unbeaten run, in 12 of which, they have scored 2 or more goals. They showed their fighting spirit by coming back from the dead, well, 2-0 down at the break and being trounced, against Premiership side Middlesbrough at the weekend, eventually snatching a draw and a replay.

Town are in the middle of the relegation dogfight, without a win and a clean sheet in 7 starts, winning just once in 11 and twice in 16 matches.

Both create plenty of chances, as you might expect, City are in the top 3 for attempts on goal, only Swansea and Doncaster, can beat their total of 417, they have also hit the woodwork 17 times. Despite their lowly league position Cheltenham are 7th in this table, so are just lacking the cutting edge.

The hosts can join Scunthorpe, who they meet this weekend, at the top of the table with 3 points this evening, I think they will get them, but the odds are very skinny. At the odds available, I feel the "over" is a far more attractive option.

4 points over 2.5 goals Bristol City-Cheltenham 1.98 asian line.

Good Luck.

WEST BROMWICH ALBION - PLYMOUTH ARGYLE

Albion are favourites of the blog and our outright selection for the Championship.

They have so many attacking options, that they look likely to score almost at will, in the 3-0 away win at Wolverhampton on Sunday, the score could have been almost anything, the home team were very lucky to avoid further humiliation. No fun to be a Wolves supporter this week.

Diomansy Kamara and Kevin Phillips are competing with each other to get on the score sheet, having both scored 3 in their last 3 starts. Albion are 11-2-1 at the Hawthorns, where they have notched 35 goals, an average of 2.5 per game, they have won 6 from 7, including the last 4 and scored 26 goals in the last 9 games.

Those are pretty formidable stats and the team just oozes class, a win tonight will take them to within one point of an automatic promotion spot and I believe they are on their way back to the Premiership.

Plymouth are in good form, unbeaten in 6, winning the last 4. However, those have come against teams a little below Albion's level and in the recent win over Coventry, which was shown live on Sky, I thought their defence looked decidedly suspect. Only Sheffield Wednesday, in the top half of the table, have conceded more goals, than the West Countrymen and I just cannot see them keeping out the division's top scorers.

This could easily go "over", 5 of the visitors last 7 in the league, have produced 3+ and WBA are "over" in 8 from 9. However, it is the home win for me.

4 points WBA -3/4 ball asian line 1.81.

Good Luck.

COPPA ITALIA ........ AS ROMA - AC MILAN

These two start their second leg semi-final all square, but with the advantage firmly with the hosts, following a 2-2 draw, at the San Siro.

I expect both teams to play conservatively, Roma have no need to press forward, as even a low scoring draw, will see them progress. they may have one eye on their upcoming table topper with Inter, but with the Nerazzurri enjoying an 11 point lead, that looks to be a lost cause. Hard to close the gap on a team that never loses, Inter have now won 14 straight games.

Milan coach, Carlo Ancelotti, has indicated that his team will adopt a cautious approach, saying

"The ideal game would go like this: we don’t concede a single goal and then score at 90 (minute)".

His defence will be boosted by the inclusion of recent signing Massimo Oddo, who starred and scored, for his former club Lazio, in their 3-0 win, in last month's Rome derby.

Ancelotti added that ‘we are expecting a difficult task tomorrow, we are going to the Olympic Stadium to win". He has named his strongest available squad ......

KEEPERS: Dida, Fiori, Storari; DEFENDERS: Bonera, Cafu, Costacurta, Grimi, Jankulovski, Maldini, Oddo, Simic; MIDFIELDERS: Ambrosini, Gattuso, Gourcuff, Kakà, Pirlo, Seedorf; STRIKERS: W. Aubameyang, Gilardino, Inzaghi.

Ronaldo, who completed his move to the Rossoneri yesterday, from Real Madrid, will not play, but his signing, is sure to keep Gilardino and Inzaghi, on their toes.

I like the visitors on the asian handicap, taking one side in Italy with a start, when their opponents do not NEED to win, is never a bad idea. Feel that Milan are the better all round team anyway and certain that they will pove that, next season.

You could also consider the "under", particularly if you are looking to trade "in running", but Carlo's boys for me.

4 points AC Milan +1/4 ball asian line 1.89.

Good Luck.

WEDNESDAY MORNING ..... NEWS AND VIEWS

Finally ! A 100% day yesterday, do not want to crow about it, as results have not be the best recently, but all 3 selections won, hopefully we can go on a good run now.

Today looks very interesting and I will have my first selection online by 14.00 cet.

The following teams have all been nibbled at, in the early exchanges on the asian lines ....

Blackburn + 1.5, Bolton -1, Cottbus + 1/2, Schalke - 1.75 and Roma -1/4.

There has been more substantial market support, in two Greek Cup matches for ........

OLYMPIAKOS - 2.25 goals 1.83 ........... down to 1.67

ILISSIAKOS + 1.25 goals 2.01 .......... 1.87.

CREWE ALEXANDRA - DONCASTER ROVERS

These two meet in the first leg, Northern Final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Both teams are likely to below strength. Rovers are set to rest 3 players, who are carrying slight knocks, Crewe's problems are more serious, with Roberts, Rix, Jack and Maynard all set to miss out.

I expect an open game, the hosts have conceded 2 or more goals in 15 of their last 25 starts and 16 of those and 5 of the last 7 have been "over".

Doncaster are really flying, have won 8 from 10 in the league and only Premiership Bolton, have stopped them from scoring in their last 17 matches, in 10 of those, they have scored 2 or more goals.
4 points Crewe-Doncaster over 2.5 goals 1.84 asian line.
Good Luck.

FRENCH CUP ......PARIS ST GERMAIN - VALENCIENNES

These two met in the league just 17 days ago, at the Parc des Princes and the visitors earned their first away win of the season.

That defeat cost Guy Lacombe his job and he was immediately replaced by Paul le Guen, who is still looking for his first victory and goal, after 3 matches in charge.

PSG put up an improved display and were very unlucky, not to beat Sochaux ,at the weekend, creating a host of chances and being denied time after time, by an inspired display by the visiting goalkeeper.

Le Guen has named a strong squad tonight and is very keen to get that elusive, first win, out of the way. The league obviously takes precedence, but a victory will do wonders for PSG's confidence. It would be a disaster, if they were to lose to the league's worst away side (1-1-10), for a second time inside 3 weeks.

As you might expect, they dominated the earlier fixture, with 57% possession and 16 attempts on goal, with a little more luck, they should take the spoils this evening.

5 points PSG -1/2 ball 1.75 betfair.

Good Luck.

SHREWSBURY TOWN- BRISTOL ROVERS

Johnstone's Paint Trophy area semi-final, with these two competing for the right, to meet Bristol City, in a two legged "Southern" final.

What a MASSIVE incentive for Rovers ! They have not met their biggest rivals in a competitive fixture for 5 years, both legs would be sold out in minutes and Sky have just annouced that the second leg will be shown live on television, so even more money for the Pirates coffers.

Then there is the possibility of progressing to the Trophy final, which is likely to be played at the Millennium Stadium, in nearby Cardiff and another huge pay day. A win tonight could be worth a fortune to Rovers.

They were very unlucky to lose at Championship leaders Derby County, in the FA Cup at the weekend. That was their first defeat in 8 starts, a run in which they have kept 6 clean sheets.

The Shrewsbury pitch is in very poor condition and several recent matches have been postponed at Gay Meadow. The forecast is dry for today, so the match should go ahead.

The hosts are bound to be a little match "rusty", having not played for 17 days. They will be without strikers Leo Fortune-West and new signing Marc Tierney, who are both cup tied.

Aaron Lescott is suspended for Rovers. I like the visitors with the half goal start, the state of the pitch will favour their strong defence.

4 points Bristol Rovers +1/2 ball 1.70 asian line.

Good Luck.

TUESDAY NEWS ...........

Something for everyone today, 4 Premiership, 4 Bundesliga, 4 French Cup tie, almost a full round in the Championship, plus a selection of lower league and cup action, from around Europe.

I will have my first selection online early this afternoon, so please check back.

Two teams have been backed on the asian lines today ...........

Championship BURNLEY + 3/4 ball 1.88 .............. down to 1.70

Johnstone's Paint SHREWSBURY -1/4 ball 1.93 ............. 1.79.

LE HAVRE - GUINCAMP

My second and final bet of the day, is for the "over"in this Ligue 2 offering, which is quoted at "2" on the goal line.

The visitors will no doubt come looking for the point, but Le havre have dropped 5 points off the pace, for an automatic promotion spot and will be desperate for the win.

They look set to be boosted by the return of key striker, Jean Lesage and their home games are averaging 2.82 goals per start.

Both teams recent matches have produced 2 or more goals, in 4 from 6 fixtures and the h2h stats favour our bet, 6 of the last 7, finishing with at least two strikes.

4 points over 2 goals Le Havre-Giuncamp 1.77 asian line.

Good Luck.

OXFORD UNITED- RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS

United looked to be coasting to the Conference title and a swift return to league football, just a few weeks ago.

However, a run of just one win in 12 starts and four consecutive home draws in the league, have left them trailing leaders Dagenham, by 9 points, albeit with one game in hand.

They are now entering "must win" territory, they have two home games in 5 days, if they can win these and with the Daggers still to visit the Kassam stadium, the sole automatic promotion spot can still be theirs. That is a big if and it all needs to start, with 3 points in front of the Sky cameras tonight.

Oxford have had a pretty full treatment room for many weeks, but with the resources avaiable to boss Jim Smith, he cannot use that as an excuse.

He continues to enjoy fantastic support from his board, who have allowed him to sign players, way ablove the average Conference standard.

Latvian International striker, Kristaps Grebis, has joined on a season long loan from Metalurgs (82 goals in 188 appearances) and is looking to make a career in English football.

Promising Welsh U19 midfielder Greg Coombes, has signed on loan from Cardiff and should start tonight.

Smith received a massive boost with the news that key player, Andy Burgess, was finally available to return to action, after a series of setbacks. This will raise the spirit of the entire club.

The visitors have picked up after a dismal start to a season, which originally, looked promising, they have won 3 in a row, but lack the quality of United, who could field a starting 11 with league experience.

They are still unbeaten (7-6-0) at the Kassam and I just get the feeling that United will, "turn it on" this evening. Home win for me.

4 points Oxford -3/4 ball asian line 1.98.

Good Luck.

Sunday, January 28, 2007

SAMPDORIA - INTER MILAN

These two met in the Coppa Italia in midweek, Inter chose to field pretty much a "b" team and still won 3-0.

Tonight they will welcome back Materazzi, Adriano, Cambiasso, Vieira and Ibrahimovic to the starting 11. Unbeaten in Serie A all season, they are looking for their 14th straight league win, an astounding record.

Sampdoria are not out of this, they did create quite a few chances in the cup tie, but after such a defeat, it will be very hard for them to turn things around, so quickly. They will not be helped by having to field their third string goalkeeper, Carlo Zotti.

Six of their last seven league wins have been by 2 or more goals, so we can also try a small bet on the handicap.

4 points Inter -1/2 ball asian line 1.78.

1 point Inter -1 goal handicap 3.10 Blue Square ( Inter must win by 2 or more).

Good Luck.

ARSENAL- BOLTON WANDERERS

Firstly, have to say I fear for Forest in the second half at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are 3-0 up at the break and had 11 attempts at goal in the first 18 minutes !

Arsenal have only 14 players to choose from, Eboue, Hleb, van Persie, Ljungberg, Gallas, Gilberto and Aliadiere are all unavailable. Jens Lehmann will be rested and Manuel Almunia will continue in goal, all this comes in a week, in which, they have already met Manchester United and North London rivals, Tottenham.

I gave some thought to backing the visitors, but think there is a better bet. I am certain that there will be goals, Bolton were a shambles at Middlesbrough last week, where they conceded 5. The Gunners are on fire and have scored 19 goals in 6 starts this year. Thierry Henry has scored in each of his last 3 starts and I think he will make it 4 in a row today.

He can be backed at 2.12 on the exchanges, an in form striker is always worth following, especially one in a team that creates as many chances, as Arsenal. I expect this bet to win.

4 points Thierry Henry to score at anytime 2.12 Betfair.
Good Luck.

SERIE A

I can only see goals in the Atalanta-Catania match.

The hosts are "over" in their last 4 and are scoring 2.2 in their home games, which are producing a massive, 3.6 per start. Despite their lofty league position, only 4 clubs have conceded more goals, than the outfit from Bergamo.

Catania are even more prolific in their away matches, but mostly at the wrong end of the pitch. They are conceding 2.5 per start and their games are averaging 3.5 in total. They will be without top scorer Gionatha Spinesi and Giuseppe Colucci, due to suspension.

Think this will be a home win, but am more confident of the "over" option, which is my selection.

Chievo have a difficult run of fixtures ahead of them, facing Lazio, Inter and Palermo in the coming weeks.

Currently sitting just 2 points above the dreaded relegation zone, they have targeted today's match with Empoli, as a must win fixture.

The visitors have serious doubts about 4 players and their away form has tailed off, with recent defeats to Catania, Reggina and Torino.

The team from Verona have had a free week and should strip fitter than Empoli, who had a tough match in midweek. A much needed win for the Flying Donkeys.

4 points Atlanta-Catania over 2.5 goals 1.77 asian line.

4 points Chievo -1/4 ball 1.80 asian line.

Good Luck.

SUNDAY MORNING .....

Sorry about this, no time to go into details, the Wolverhampton Wanderers - West Bromwich Albion match starts in just over an hour and I am backing the "over".

The visitors create a lot of chances, only Southampton have had more attempts on goal this season in the Championship and they are averaging over 3 per game.

Wolves are not as prolific at converting, but also have plenty of attempts. These two are pushing for promotion and will not want a replay, however, no love is lost between these bitter rivals, so we can expect a full bloodied cup tie, with plenty of excitement.

4 points Wolves-WBA over 2.25 goals 1.88 asian line.

Good Luck.

THEATRE OF DREAMS ...............

No need to worry, I am not referring to Griffin Park this time, but the other one, Old Trafford, where Manchester United are hosting Portsmouth, in the final FA Cup tie, of the day.

Sir Alex has a fully fit squad to choose from and is considering one, or maybe two changes, but nothing more. No doubt Wayne Rooney will be desperate to play, having finally broken his goal scoring duck, at the Emirates Stadium last week.

I expect a classy performance from the Reds, they are the league's top scorers and have already put 3 past David James, when these two met in October.

United will be a little concerned that they seem unable to keep a clean sheet, they have only one in 11 starts and none in the last 6. Hope they do not start today, as I am going for the "over". Think Pompey may get on the scoresheet and favour a 2-1/ 3-1 result, but will side with the safer option.

4 points over 2.5 goals Manchester United-Portsmouth 1.72 asian line.

Good Luck.

BRENTFORD - CARLISLE

I covered this game, THE game of the day, earlier in the week, you can read or re-read my comments here .........

http://ubet2win.blogspot.com/2007/01/this-is-little-unusual.html

Brentford might not win, but I can tell you they have received a real boost this week and as a club, they are 100% committed to getting the 3 points today. Neil Shipperley will make his eagerly anticipated debut.

No ones place is safe, I understand, 1 0r 2 further players will join before the window ends and maybe a couple will leave, believe me, anyone that leaves will be going to a lower league club.

There will be no non triers.

I am going to add a further 2 points to our original bet, 2.75 is freely available and 2.82 on the exchanges.

2 points Brentford -1/2 ball 2.82 Betfair.

I have one more bet, for an evening kick off, that will be online at half time in the UK afternoon matches, so, circa 17.00 cet.

Check back.

FULHAM - STOKE CITY

I think we will see goals in this game, Fulham give up a lot of chances and conceded 5 goals in the two matches with Leicester City, in the third round.

They will be without key goalkeeper, Antti Niemi and been "over" in 7 of their last 10, on loan striker Vincenzo Montella will make his debut.

Stoke are on a good run, have won 10 of their last 15, scoring in 13 of them. They have shown their ambition, by signing Salif Diao from Liverpool and Lee Martin of Manchester United, on season long loan deals, both will play today. They are also still hoping to come to an arrangement with Lee Hendrie next week.

This should be an open encounter, similar to the Leicester tie, with plenty of goals.

4 points Fulham-Leicester over 2.25 goals 1.76 asian line.

Good Luck.

BLACKPOOL- NORWICH CITY

The Seasiders are in terrific form, are 9-1-1 in their last 11 starts and are closing in on a promotion spot.

With a fantastic history and substantial fan base, they are something of a sleeping giant, at least at Division 1 level and are looking to relive some of their glory days.

Cup fever has hit the town, the trophy was in Blackpool earlier this week and the match has long been sold out, as most games at Bloomfield Road will be, from now on.

City are without Shackell, Chadwick and top scorer Robert Earnshaw, following a run of just one win and 5 losses in 8 starts, they now sit just 5 points above the relegation zone and have matches in the next two weeks, against teams directly below them. The Canaries may have to give priority to preserving their Championship status.

Never the best of travellers, Norwich have won only 8 of their last 56 away league games and may struggle to win a very tough looking game today.

These two may be facing each other next season in the league and the hosts look to hold all the advantages today.

4 points Blackpool level ball asian line 1.70.

Good Luck.

BIRMINGHAM - READING

I have read in several places that the Blues have 4 players out, including on loan , future star, Nicklas Bendtner, but I think that information is wrong.

On the Birmingham website, boss Steve Bruce himself says that "only Kelly and Forssell are unavailable, I am likely to name an unchanged squad". Bendtner will probably be on the bench, but is there, if needed.

Reading are without Kitson, Doyle, Gunnarsson and Sonko, Steve Coppell has given the cup low priority so far and is likely to field pretty much a "b" team, he did the same in the previous round and also, last season.

Blues have only played twice this year, Reading 5 times, so all the advantages seem to be with the home team, they showed their potential in the 5-1 win at Newcastle and are very motivated today.

3 points Birmingham -1/2 ball 2.18 betfair.

Good Luck.

FA CUP ...... EARLY KICK OFF

Early start for the Luton-Blackburn game and I am siding firmly with the Premiership side, I like a couple of "upsets" later, but do not see one here.

Luton have defensive problems and only Leeds have conceded more in the Championship this season.

Rovers have thrown off their tight image and Mark Hughes has an array of attacking options at his disposal. They have scored 15 in their last 6 games away from Ewood Park, including 3 at Manchester City and 4 at Everton in the last round, those two are, normally, far more frugal than Luton.

Add to that a win at Reading and we can see they are prepared to really go for it, on the road.

The midweek loss at Watford, will only make them more determined to get back on track at Kenilworth Road, an away win and it should be comfortable.

4 points Blackburn -1/2 ball 1.80 asian line.

SERVICE WITH A SMILE ............

...... I keep returning to this price for Sharapova to serve the most aces, which is higher every time I look , currently trading at 2.70. Just wait 5 minutes and it will be 2.72 !

This was covered in my previous post and seems too high, I agree Serena is favourite in this market, but I give Sharapova more than a 37% chance. Like I said, those big old arms get a racquet to most balls, however hard they are hit.

Will just put up a nominal bet, as we have already played on the final.

1.5 points Sharapova to serve the most aces 2.70 Pinnacle.

Good Luck.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS ...... WOMEN'S FINAL

Maria -Serena, dream final for the sponsors and organisers, hopefully for the viewers too.

Last time these two met was, in the semis here two years ago, where Williams prevailed, 8-6 in the decider. Sharapova served for the match in both the second and third sets. Something similar would be fantastic.

These are two great champions and it could be just as close this time round, Williams is not overly concerned about her opponent, thinking that if she plays well, it will be enough, regardless of what Sharapova does.

From yesterdays interview ....
SERENA WILLIAMS: Like I've always said, I think if I play well, if I play my game, do what I can do, it's hard for anyone to beat me. I got to make sure I'm playing well. Sometimes I have a tendency to shank a few balls, to miss‑hit, not be on. If I'm on, it's tough.

"I think my stamina, my mental ability, my sheer desire. I played a couple good matches, but I definitely haven't peaked. Like I always say, I got to wait till I get to the finals to peak hopefully. Hopefully that's what I'm doing."

All credit to the American, she has not had things easy and found a way to beat Petrova, Jankovic, Peer and Vaidisova, en route to the final.

Maria has not lost a set since the opening round, when she struggled in the heat and was close to going out. However, she has been giving chances on her serve, despite beating Clijsters 4 &2, her opponent won the break point count 12-8 !

I think this will go all the way, feel that Williams is overpriced ( 3.05 +), but my bet will be on a third set. Pinnacle offer over 2.5 sets @2.24, nearer the start, a combined bet on both to win

2-1 in sets, on the exchanges, will pay a little higher, even allowing for commission.

I looked at the serve stats, Serena has a bigger serve ( 125mph- 118 mph) and is averaging about 3 aces per match more, which is why Sharapova is quoted at 2.68. However, few players ace the tall, broad shouldered Russian, who has a huge wingspan and can get a racquet to most balls, in her last 12 grand slam matches, no one has aced her more than twice, so beware!

4 points Williams-Sharapova over 2.5 sets 2.24 pinnacle.

Good Luck.

GILLINGHAM - TRANMERE

Gillingham have major problems tonight and we have to oppose them, one more time.

They have gone 11 games (2-2-7) without a clean sheet and once again, must field a makeshift defence. In addition, Matthew Jarvis and Mark Bentley, widely regarded as their two best players, are both carrying injuries and face late tests.

Tranmere will be well rested, having not played, in 7 days, this will be the Gills third game in 6 days.

Rovers face two main promotion rivals next, in Oldham and Doncaster and will be boosted by the return of 12 goal striker, Chris Greenacre, they will be hoping that he can shoot them to victory. They are tight at the back, no team outside the playoff places has conceded fewer, at level ball they look good value, especially given Gillingham's porous defence.

4 points Tranmere level ball asian line 1.94 ...... there is a little 1.98 on Betfair.

Good Luck.

WHERE'S THE MONEY GOING ?

Two teams have been supported on the asian lines this morning .........

GONZALEZ - HAAS

I just cannot go along with the odds for this men's semi-final.

Gonzalez has been very impressive in straight sets wins over Blake and Nadal, but he was a big outsider in both of those and now he is a heavy favourite. This is his first ever apperance in a grand slam last 4 and he is known to get nervous at times, as indeed does his opponent.

He has had a day off, which will have allowed everything to sink in and I just wonder which Fernando will turn up, the one who destroyed Nadal, or the one taken to a deciding set by Juan Martin Del Potro ( who ?).

This is Haas' third semi-final in Melbourne and he will be pleased that all the pressure is now on the Chilean. Tommy came close to taking out Federer here last year, creating plenty of break points and losing in a tight, 5th set.

Not sure that Gonzalez can maintain the same level for a third straight round, in his "good" matches he has won 60% of points on his second serve, when that has dipped, he has struggled a little, I am expecting a dip in form, or the palms to get a little sweaty.

To be honest, the odds for Haas are a bit of a joke, they are 12% higher than for his win over Davydenko. Haas did have some treatment in his win over the Russian, but claims to be OK, some cynics thought that was "tactical" anyway. Think we might see a few "tricks" here , Gonzalez likes to play very quickly at times, it was surprising that Nadal didn't try to really slow things down, we might see some of that tonight.

I have to back the German and suggest you do too.

4 points Haas to beat Gonzalez 3.05 Betfair.

Good Luck.

TONIGHT'S FOOTBALL

In Ligue 1, the Nancy-St Etienne match should be tight, neither can afford to lose, if they are to hold realistic ambitions of playing european football, next season.

Nancy have a fine 8-1-1 record at home, but will be without 3 strikers tonight, Kim and Brison are suspended and Dia is injured, they are likely to play with a lone front man.

The visitors star player, Fredric Piquionne is "injured" and looks on his way out of the club, after vowing to "never play for them again".

Half of Nancy's wins at the Stade Marcel Picot, have come against teams in the bottom 6, St Etienne tend to raise their game in the tougher fixtures. They are my choice to collect at least a point tonight.

In the Dutch Cup, PSV are fielding their first 11 for the visit of Go Ahead Eagles, to the Phillips-Stadion, where they have an amazing 11-0-0 , goals F40- A5 record, in the league.

Boss Ronald Koeman, has said, he will make 3 changes at half time, if the score allows. They will go for it from the off and will want to better Ajax and AZ, who scored 4 and 5 respectively, in their cup ties this week.

Half-time/ full time, double result for the hosts is around 1.30 and will probably oblige, but the bet I like is with Betfair, on the correct score market, for "unquoted", this is basically any result with PSV scoring 4 or more. Which is what they are averaging against better teams than Go Ahead Eagles.

3 points St Etienne +1/2 ball 1.78
4 points "unquoted" correct score PSV-Go Ahead Eagles 1.78 Betfair.

Good Luck.

THURSDAY MARKET MOVES ..........

It should not come as a great surprise, that the asian lines have been very quiet this morning.

However, the following have come in for a little support ....

LIGUE 1 NANCY- ST.ETIENNE under 2 goals 2.04 ........ down to 1.91

SUDAMERICANO U20 ARGENTINA -3/4 ball 2.11 ............. 1.98

AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS ........ FEDEX - A ROD

I have to pass on the women's semis, think that the Sharapova-Clijsters match, is a true coin flip and the bookmakers agree.

The word is that Serena is tired, which is not a surprise and I guess that is why Vaidisova's odds have tumbled, originally quoted at 2.20 in a place, she has been backed down to 1.78 on Betfair.

The American has had a day off, so really, tiredness should not come into it, I prefer the Czech player, but not at the current odds, no bet.

Federer has an incredible, 12-1 record over Roddick, however, Andy has managed to take a set in the two most recent meetings, at last year's US Open and in the end of season, Masters Cup in Shanghai .

Roddick served at 80% in that match and had chances to win, think he now believes he CAN beat Federer , which is thanks, in no small part, to Jimmy Connors, it may not happen today, but someday soon.

Key is likely to be the second serve, the only time Federer's has dropped below 50% in their meetings, was in his solitary defeat. To win, Roddick is going to have to gamble, both on his and his opponents second serve.

I think the American will take a set and maybe two and can see plenty of value in him to get off to a flyer and take the first. Connors will have drummed into him, that a good start is crucial. That will be my main bet and I will pair it, with a little on the match to go to a decider.

2.5 points Roddick to win the first set 3.75 general // stan james.

1 point Federer to win 3-2 sets 8.0 general // stan james.

Good Luck.

VALENCIENNES - LE MANS

Valenciennes are very much Ligue 1's surprise package this season and have been very impressive at their Nungesser home.

Infact, it is something of a fortress, they have lost just 3 of their last 53 games there, conceding 25 goals, at an average of 0.47.

Unusually, they have 4 players all returning from suspension tonight and skipper, Laurent Dufresne, is also available following sickness.

Despite these recent absences, they have won their last 4 in Ligue and Cup, all by the identical 2-1 scoreline.

Le Mans are pretty much a "home" team too and will surely come looking for the single point. They will, no doubt, be keeping a close eye on Steve Savidan, whom Valenciennes are very dependent upon to score their goals, having scored 45 in 92 starts for the team from Nord.

Given the 1/4 ball quote, the hosts look a very strong bet.

4 points Valenciennes -1/4 ball 2.05 asian line.

Good Luck.

MONACO - RENNES

Laurent Banide has revitalised Monaco, since taking charge of the Red and White.

After looking set for a season of struggle, they have gone on a run of just one loss in 9 starts and that has improved their prospects so much, that a win tonight, could even ignite European ambitions.

Banide has noticed that the squad have blossomed since his arrival and look a far more relaxed group of players now. This is the first of 4 matches in 10 days and he has impressed upon his team, how vital a win is tonight.

They should be boosted by the return of Koller, Cufre, Toure and Givet , have not conceded in 3 starts and will be encouraged by their record in this fixture, where they have won 8 of the last 11.

Rennes are without Marveaux and Edman and will be forced into reorganising the defence, looking especially weak on the left side. They are 1-3-5 away from home, scoring just 3 times, they look very lightweight up front and in all games, only Nice have scored fewer.

The hosts look to hold all the cards and a home win looks likely.

Squads ......

MONACO Ruffier, Roma - Modesto, Cufré, Bolivar, Monsoreau, Givet, Dos Santos - Mongongu, Plasil, Touré, Gerard, Leko, Meriem - Menez, Vargas, Koller, Gakpé

RENNES Pouplin, Revault - Bourillon, Mensah, Coulibaly, Faty, Melchiot, Borne - Didot, Cheyrou, Sorlin, Bru, Danze, Monterrubio - Sow, Utaka, Moreira, Briand

4 points Monaco -1/2 ball 1.77 Betfair.

Good Luck.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS ........... WOMEN'S SEMI-FINALS

We now have the line up, MARIA SHARAPOVA - KIM CLIJSTERS and SERENA WILLIAMS-NICOLE VAIDISOVA.

Pretty much a tournament organiser/ sponsors dream, both are scheduled for tonight, so not too much rest for Sharapova and Clijsters, who both battled through scrappy quarter-finals, in the early hours of this morning. I am, of course, using European times here.

Kim leads the h2h 4-2, all have been on hardcourts, 3-1 outdoors. The Russian has won the last two, which both came last year, only one really huge meeting, which came in the 2005 US Open, the Belgian progressing in 3 sets.

We took two outright bets at the start of the tournament ...........

5 points Kim Clijsters 5.23 Pinnacle // 5.10 exchanges
2 points Nicole Vaidisova 19.5 exchanges.

details of which can be found here .....

The choice is up to you, actually it is ALWAYS up to you, but a nice profit is there, if you wish to take it, Clijsters can be layed at 3.05 and Vaidisova at 6.20 with Betfair.

Even if you just layed enough to get your stakes back, you would have a potential, 11 point and 26 point profit respectively, with absolutely no risk. For the purposes of the blog, that is my recommendation. You could choose to hedge more and ensure a profit either way, or not to hedge at all.

I will cover these games briefly tonight, but will be approaching them, as though we had no outstanding bets. Think that is the fairest way, in case we have any newbies, or readers that missed out on the outright bets.

Some nice football action today, including a full round of Ligue 1 matches in France. Will be concentrating on the "beautiful game" in the next couple of posts.

Check back.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS ........now it's getting serious

I have written so much about the tennis in the last 10 days, that we can keep things simple for tonight.

Think the Haas-Davydenko match will be very close, seriouly considered backing the German player, but I am worried about his nerve, he has a poor record against the top players and has lost his two "big" matches against Davy. Throwing away a winning position (2-0) in the US Open and losing at Roland Garros. You could back him at his current odds, with a view to trading out "in running", sure that he will trade shorter at some stage. However, I will pass.

Clijsters should beat Hingis and keep both our outright bets alive. H2h they are tied at 4-4, but Kim has won all 3 since the Swiss Miss made her comeback, including here last year, might go to a 3rd set, hope not, no bet.

Going to stay with Anna Chakvetadze, she is in unbelievable form and is very confident, think she will be aggressive against Sharapova and can push her all the way. Their only previous meeting went to Maria 7-5 in the third, something similar could well be on the cards. A Chakvetadze win, would not surprise me, but a lay of Sharapova 2-0 in sets, is my choice.

Finally, Nadal-Gonzalez is the night game, so all us Europeans can watch, over our morning coffee, which is far more civilised, as an Englishman, I will of course, be drinking tea. Gonzo is talking a good match and seems very happy and confident, just cannot see this being quick and am going "over" on the total games.

lay 5 points Sharapova 2-0 sets 1.75 Betfair ( max loss 3.75 points).

4 points over 39.5 games Gonzalez-Nadal 1.75 Betfair.

Good Luck.

This is a little unusual ..........

.... but I am going to suggest a bet for the weekend.

Brentford have received two massive boosts this week, firstly the club, which has massive debts, has received a , £3m ,5 year interest free loan, from a supporter. This has relieved a huge amount of pressure on the cash strapped club, it has enabled them to restructure their finances and plan for the future. They do own the freehold on their ground, which is in a very expensive part of the country and would be ripe for developing. Will not bore you with any further details, but this is incredible news for the Londoners.

Today, The Bees signed Neil Shipperley on a season long contract, from Premiership club, Sheffield United. This is a deal that seemed totally impossible, just a week ago and has been financed by the supporters.

I can tell you that the club is on a high for the first time this season, further signings may even be possible, before the window closes. They went to play Leyton Orient in a friendly this afternoon and WON 1-0.

They have 17 games left this season and will probably have to win 10 to survive. First up is the visit of Carlisle to Griffin Park at the weekend, they are 2-4-8 away and have lost 6 of their last 10. Brentford are likely to have an extra 1,000 or so on the gate, following this weeks news and have to win, to give theirselves a chance to stay up. This is one of the better fixtures they could have and a realistic chance.

I think the odds may fall a little, once the news is common knowledge and especially if, any further signings are made, suggest we get involved now.

3 points Brentford -1/2 ball 2.80 Bet 365// 2.75 Stan James.

Good Luck.

SWANSEA CITY - GILLINGHAM

I like Swansea here, they have lost only once in 8 starts, a win will take them into a playoff place and that is surely where they belong.

Their next two starts are away from the Liberty Stadium and with the FA Cup taking centre stage at the weekend, they will be desperate to get these 3 points in the bag and not lose too much ground to their rivals.

They look to be meeting the right opponent, at the right time. The Gills are without a win and have conceded 10 goals, in their last 4 starts. They are further handicapped by defensive problems tonight, Ian Cox is suspended and they had to draft in an emergency goalkeeper yesterday, when Derby recalled their's, who was on loan at Gillingham, with just 24 hours notice.

They are very "leaky" anyway, no team has conceded more in Division 1 and away from home, their total of 34 goals against, at an average of 2.43 per game, is 10 more than any team in the relegation zone.

Swansea are tight at the back, at home, only Yeovil have conceded fewer. They will be boosted by the return of midfield dynamo Darren Pratley and new signing Pawel Abbott. The 24 yo striker joined from Huddersfield, where he was very much a crowd favourite, he will be competing for a place in the starting 11, alongside Lee Trundle and Adebayo Akinfenwa. That is a trio, that most clubs would give their eye teeth for, certainly, at this level.

The Swans create a LOT of chances, their total of 390 attempts at goal, is far and away, the highest in Division 1, as is the 20 times they have hit the woodwork ! They should collect the spoils tonight.

4 points Swansea -3/4 ball 1.86 asian line.

Good Luck.

STEVENAGE BOROUGH - ST ALBANS

Broadhall Way is the venue for this Conference league, local derby, tonight.

The contrast in current form between these rivals, could hardly be greater, the visitors have lost 7 from 8, including two against lower league teams, in various cups, conceding 21 goals in the process. The hosts have won 7 in a row and scored a whopping 28 goals in 9 starts, over 3.1 per game.

Boro will be determined to win and keep the pressure on the teams above them in the table, especially with a tough looking trip to Gravesend at the weekend.

It is hard not to see goals also. Stevenage have scored a league high 32 times at home and are "over" in 23 of 30 matches this season.

St Albans are averaging 3.6 goals in their last 10 and have conceded a league high 28 times, "on the road".

The reverse fixture, which took place just 4 weeks ago, unsurprisingly, ended 2-3 to the Boro.

You can pretty much take your choice, the home at 1.54, or the "over" at 1.65. I narrowly favour the home win, but feel both will oblige.

5 points Stevenage -1/2 ball 1.54 Betfair.

Good Luck.

TUESDAY ....... NEWS AND MOVES

Three teams have come in for support on the asian lines this morning, the first two are pretty big movers.

CARLING CUP WYCOMBE +2 goals 2.22 down to .......... 1.87
CLUB FRIENDLY WERDER BREMEN -1.5 goals 1.77 ............. -1.75 goals 1.79
SUDAMERICANO U20 COLOMBIA level ball 2.095 ..... 1.93

The football and tennis looks VERY interesting today, I will be back early afternoon with my first selection.

Check back.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN .......... WOMEN'S QUARTER FINALS

First two quarters take place overnight (European time), first on court, is the all Czech match up between Nicole Vaidisova and Tomas Berdych's long time partner, Lucie Safarova.

These two have met 3 times, with Vaidisova leading 2-1, including the only previous hardcourt encounter, every match has gone the distance and that may be the case again today.

Safarova will be buoyed by her defeat of defending champion, Amelie Mauresmo and Vaidisova, who is in excellent shape, claims to be "improving with every match" and "very excited" with her form.

I have no doubt that she will progress, but it may take a deciding set, which is nicely priced at 4.40.

In the Serena Williams-Shahar Peer match, which follows, I think that the bookmakers have over reacted to the American's "return to form", she is still clearly overweight, faces an inform opponent and is a VERY short price.

We have to stick with Peer, who has done us proud so far, her first serve percentage was in the mid 70's in her win over Kuznetsova and she looks set for a top ten place.

In a post match interview, she said that her loss to Serena two years ago was irrelevant, as "I have a different game and am playing much better now, that was my first year on tour".

The Israeli player is very ambitious, despite a fine 2006, she decided to change her entire coaching staff and also added Jose Higueras, to her retinue. Peer explained "I have a new team now. I still have my own psychology. I think it was only my second year last year, and I improved a lot. But now I think I stepped up and improved my game. I'm more aggressive. I'm improving more and more my serve and try to come in when I can. I think everything is slowly, slowly getting better and better. "

This is another match that could go the distance, so a lay of 2-0 Serena, looks the safest option.

1.5 points Vaidisova to win 2-1 sets 4.40 Betfair.

LAY 3.5 points Serena Williams to win 2-0 sets 2.18 Betfair ( max exposure will be 4.13 points).

Good Luck.

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE - COVENTRY CITY

As predicted, Micky Adams paid the price for Coventry's poor run of form and was dismissed last week. 8 games without a win and 22 goals conceded, tells it's own story.

The Sky Blues make the long trip to Plymouth tonight, with a handful of injuries and looking very short of quality in defence, Ward and Cameron will be especially missed.

The back four are likely to be in for a torrid time from the Pilgrims, who are suddenly spoilt for choice up front.

Argyle boss Ian Holloway, has been very active in the transfer window, adding 3 strikers to his squad, Kevin Gallen (QPR) and Scott Sinclair (Chelsea) a very promising youngster, who has already made his Blues debut, have joined on loan. Holloway has broken the Plymouth transfer record ,to sign Rory Fallon from Swansea.

They have also taken Hungarian International, Peter Halmosi, on loan from Debrecen, the midfielder was very close to joining Celtic last season and is out to impress. He will be looking to set up chances for the strikers, who are vying for a starting place alongside top scorer, Barry Hayles.

A win infront of the TV cameras, will take the hosts to within 4 points of a play-off place and they should be up to the task.

3 points Plymouth -1/2 ball 1.97 Betfair.

Good Luck.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN ......... WEEK 2

Some very interesting matches tonight, think we will learn a lot.

Maria Sharapova may not have things all her own way and could be extended by Vera Zvonareva, who likesto keep the ball in play, could be some long rallies here.

The Murray-Nadal tie should also be a lot closer than the bookmakers think, of course Rafa is favourite, but sub 1.35 is far too short. My price would be nearer 1.60, so I cannot let the 3.55 on the British player pass.

Likewise, Blake-Gonzalez, they are 3-3 h2h, but the hard hitting Chilean has won the last two and both of their hardcourt meetings. There will be plenty of huge forehands, with both looking to hit to their opponents backhand. Once again, the same argument, no problem with Blake being favourite, but 2.96 for Gonzalez seems too big.

Finally, I have Anna Chakvetadze favourite to beat Patty Schnyder. She is having fun at present, has won 18 of her last 19 and has beaten 3 "top tenners" in this run, collecting three titles.

The 19 yo can take this and set up an all Russian quarter final against the winner of the Sharapova- Zvonareva match.

4 points Chakvetadze to beat Schnyder 2.10 Betfair.

2.5 points Gonzalez to beat Blake 2.96 Betfair.

1.5 points Murray to beat Nadal 3.55 Betfair.

Good Luck.

REAL MALLORCA - REAL MADRID

The meagre Mallorca defence of early season, has faded into distant memory and now, they are happy to try and outscore their opponents.

They are "over" in their last 8, which produced 31 goals, at an average of 3.875 per game.

Madrid have gone a little goal shy recently, but only Barcelona and Recreativo, have scored more and no team has won as many games "on the road". They have still been creating chances and the goals will flow eventually.

These two usually provide plenty of entertainment, 9 of the last 10 meetings have been "over", at an average of 3.7 goals.

Hard not to see a repeat tonight.

4 points over 2.25 goals Mallorca-Real Madrid 1.83 asian goal line.

Good Luck.

STILL TO COME ..........

I have one more selection for tonight's La Liga action, which will be online before 16.00 cet.

Will also put a quick preview of day 8 from the Australian Open tennis, online early evening. There are some very attractive looking match ups, highlights of which are, Murray-Nadal , Blake-Gonzalez, Sharapova-Zvonareva and Li Na- Hingis. Just 12 players remain in the singles events and our two outright selections for the Women's title, are still going strong.

Back later.

LAZIO - AC MILAN

The Rossoneri travel to the Eternal City, trailing Lazio, who are in the final Champions League qualifying spot, by 3 points .

Milan's whole season is dedicated to reaching 4th position in Serie A, the top 3 look to have "slipped the field", so only one place is up for grabs.

Despite having a Coppa Italia match in midweek, they have spent all week training, only, for today. Clarence Seedorf said that "we have worked hard in recent days and have had the right kind of attitude", adding "we are thinking only about playing a good game against Lazio and obtaining the three points that are fundamental in reaching fourth place. We want to give an important signal in this game, we absolutely must reach fourth place in the league. "

They have finally found some consistency in the league, winning their last 3 and scoring 3 goals in each.

Lazio will probably be very pleased with their season to date, but seemed resigned to losing captain Massimo Oddo, who looks set to finally sign for .......... Milan, next week, if he plays today, which seems likely, he will be put in a very strange and awkward position. They will also be without the suspended Guglielmo Stendardo.

Kaka returns for the visitors who have named the following squad ....

KEEPERS: Dida, Fiori, Storari ; DEFENDERS: Bonera, Cafu, Costacurta, Grimi, Maldini, Jankulovski, Simic; MIDFIELDERS: Ambrosini, Brocchi, Gattuso, Gourcuff, Kakà, Pirlo, Seedorf; STRIKERS: Aubameyang, Gilardino, Inzaghi, Ricardo Oliveira.

Milan have a fantastic record against the Biancoceleste, losing only once in 10 visits ,to the Stadio Olimpico and twice, in 22 meetings overall. They should not come away empty handed tonight.

4 points Milan -1/4 ball asian line 2.0.

Good Luck.

ARSENAL- MANCHESTER UNITED

Game to savour at the Emirates Stadium today.

I get the feeling we may see something of a classic, both enter the game in excellent goalscoring form and this could develop into a very open encounter.

These are the top two scorers in the Premiership with 43 and 52 goals respectively, each notching 14 in their last 5 starts. United are without a clean sheet in 4.

Last 2 meetings ( at Highbury) finished 0-0, but the previous 7 averaged 3.57 goals.

Thierry Henry may just be hitting his stride and will be out to impress today, if forced to choose, I would probably side with the Gunners, but strongly feel that the "over" is the better option.

5 points over 2 goals Arsenal-Manchester United asian goal line 1.70.

Good Luck.

REAL BETIS SEVILLE - RACING SANTANDER

Betis boss, Luis Fernandez, started his reign in fine style with a 1-0 home win over Celta Vigo, but was brought sharply down to earth , with a 5-1 hammering at Osasuna, last week.

Therefore, the 1-1 draw they earned at Real Madrid in midweek, knocking the giants from the capital out of the Copa del Rey, would have given their confidence a mighty and much needed boost.

They have to win today. Victory could take them out of the bottom 3, but anything less, especially facing fixtures against Barcelona, Seville and Valencia in the next 3 weeks, would be a total disaster.

Racing's ambitions for the season, do not extend beyond, preserving their position of safety, in mid table and they should accomplish that. I do not think there is too much between these two sides and this is the type of game Betis have to win, if they are to survive.

H2h favours the hosts, who have not lost in 11 meetings with Santander.

5 points Real Betis Seville -1/4 ball asian line 1.78.

Good Luck.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN ............. DAY 7

Just a few words about some very attractive looking matches.

I will put up two bets for players that we have discussed in depth over recent weeks and one tiny "value bet".

Firstly, in the men's tournament, think that the Federer-Djokovic and Ancic-Roddick matches, could be much closer than the bookmakers odds suggest and would not be surprised if one, or both , went to a 5th set. Djokovic is a player of immense potential and 11.5 for him to take Fed-ex to a 5th set (and lose) looks fair.

Jankovic should beat Williams, but looks too short, this will be fun to watch though.

I will stick with Vaidisova, to beat Dementieva, Nicole should get some cheap points on her own serve and also on her opponents.

Shahar Peer will have to raise her game to defeat Svetlana Kuznetsova, but is priced very nicely at 3.40, the Russian player has still to prove she is 100% fit and fully recovered from her breathing problems.

1/2 point Federer to win 3-2 sets 11.5 Betfair.

2 points Peer to beat Kuznetzova 3.40 Betfair.

4 points Vaidisova to beat Dementieva 1.75 Betfair.

Good Luck.

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME .......... INDIANAPOLIS COLTS - NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Going for the Patriots and the points, for two reasons, Belichick and Brady.

Been there, done it, got several tee shirts, these two simply find a way to get the job done and "simply" is the key word. Whatever happens, they do not panic, or make stupid mistakes, just deal with the situation. Last week, 8 points down in the 4th quarter, away from home to a very good San Diego team, B+B were the coolest men in the stadium and New England sneaked the win .

Since teaming up, they are 12-1 in the playoffs and are looking to make their 4th Superbowl in 6 years, eliminating Indianapolis in 2 of the last 3.

Certain that the Colts would rather play somebody, anybody, else, the Patriots don't seem to care who they play, that is a massive mental advantage.

Pats are 8-1 on the road and the inexplicable loss to Miami aside, they have scored 24 + points in each game.

The much maligned Colts defense, has really picked up post season and restricted Baltimore to just 2 field goals last week. In Peyton Manning they have a born leader and to be honest, the dream Superbowl for most neutrals would be Colts - Saints and that would be quite a spectacle.

However, I have to side with the winning experience of Belichick and Brady and even if the Colts' Adam Vinatieri, comes out to break a tie and kick a game winning field goal, as time expires, against his former club, we are covered with the points.

Many would see that as poetic justice, under those circumstances, don't expect him to miss, he also has ice flowing through his veins, made two superbowl winning kicks for the Pats and has never missed for the Colts in the RCA Dome (26-26).

Some people have a hard life, in addition to all the fame, money and adulation, Brady now has to deal with having Brazilian supermodel, Gisele Bundchen , as the woman in his life, it's tough at the top!

4 points New England Patriots + 3.5 points 1.92 Betfair.

Good Luck.

NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME ........... CHICAGO BEARS- NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

Wonderful year for the Saints, regardless of what happens from now on in. This is the first Championship game in their 40 year history and they are the first team to reach a title game, after losing 13 or more games the previous season. Add Hurricane Katrina into the equation and it is a remarkable achievement.

However, it is a long way from the comfort of the Superdome, to the exposed environs of Soldier Field. Conditions are set to be very tough tomorrow, the temperature will definitely be sub zero and with the wind blowing off Lake Michigan, it will feel much colder and snow is also very possible.

Everyone seems to have doubts regarding Bears quarterback Rex Grossman and it is easy to understand why. Despite putting up career high stats of 21 completions from 38 attempts and 282 yards, in the overtime win over Seattle, he was still sacked 3 times, fumbled and threw an interception. Every play is an adventure, with him at the helm.

However, given the conditions, this is likely to be a lowish scoring battle, with the ball mostly on the ground. This may suit both teams, at least to begin with, Chicago having struggled to establish a pass rush since losing Tommie Harris and the Saints having great success with the run, at Philly last week.

As I write, it is -6 degrees at the stadium, which feels like -11 with the wind chill. If the snow comes, it will be a little warmer tomorrow, but will hardly make the conditions any easier.

With the line currently set at 42.5 points, it has to be the "under" for me.

4 points "under" 42.5 points Bears-Saints 1.91 + vegas line // 1.93 Pinnacle.
Good Luck.

ATLETICO MADRID - OSASUNA

Meet for the 3rd time in 12 days, we were firmly with the team from Pamplona in midweek....

http://ubet2win.blogspot.com/2007/01/osasuna-atletico-madrid.html

where I argued that, Osasuna would be the more motivated of the two.

Think it is time to jump ship and plunge on Atletico tonight, the hosts are eager to claim a Champions League place and have been big spenders this season. This will be the first of two home games, which precede a very tough February schedule. Future superstar, Sergio Aguero, the 18 yo Argentine player, will return to the starting 11, alongside Fernando Torres.

Osasuna are without six players, Flano is suspended, Delporte injured and Romeo, Corrales, Jusetxo and Milosevic, are all rested. The last 3 named plus Flano, are pretty much first names on the team sheet and are being "saved" for the "tough campaign" ahead. Squad rotation, it seems a little strange, especially so soon after the, admittedly short, winter break.

I expect the hosts to win.

5 points Atletico Madrid -1/4 ball 1.73 asian line.

LUTON TOWN- BARNSLEY

The pitch is likely to be a little heavy at Kenilworth Road and that is my only concern about the game, in which I strongly favour the home team.

Think that Town are in a false position in the table, they currently sit 3 places and 5 points above today's opponents, who are in the final relegation spot.

In recent starts Mike Newell's team have shown a lot of talent and team spirit and at times, have comprehensively outplayed, some of the division's top sides in Birmingham, West Bromwich and Preston.

Strong at home, where they have scored more goals than any team outside the top 6, Luton will be fresh and raring to go, having not played for 8 days.

Barnsley have beaten only Burnley ( on a very poor run) in 10 starts and have failed to score, in 6 of their last 8. They have tried to address this problem, by signing a new striker, but two deals have fallen through at the last moment.

Town to put some daylight between theirselves and the relegation scrap, home win.

4 points Luton -1/2 ball asian line 1.83.

Good Luck.

CRYSTAL PALACE- HULL CITY

Palace boss, Peter Taylor welcomes his former club to Selhurst Park today, having left the Humberside side in the summer, after guiding them to two promotions.

He is sure to have a little inside knowledge to pass on to his players. The South Londoners have a strong squad, one which has been strengthened by the signing of Paul Ifill for £750k from Sheffield United, he should make his home debut today.

Palace sit 7 points off the play-off places and are in fine current form, unbeaten in 6, they have won the last 3, scoring 9 goals in the process and have won 5 of their last 6 home starts. With a difficult looking trip to Sunderland up next, Taylor will want the points in the bag, from the visit of Hull, who sit one spot above the drop zone.

City have added Dean Windass to their squad and he may partner Jon Parkin up front, in what is a heavyweight duo, in all meanings of the word. Parkin is listed at 85 kilos in his profile, yes, when he left school and I can run the 100 metres in 9.6 seconds !

No doubt that this pair have talent, just wouldn't like to take them to lunch, they must make up the heaviest strike force in world football and that includes matching Ronaldo with anyone !

Opposing fans are going to have a field day.
Just in case, either of them ever get to see this, only joking boys !

I expect Palace to win and with 7 of their next 9, against teams currently 13th or lower in the table, to put in a late push for a top 6 place.

4 points Crystal Palace -1/2 ball 1.86 asian line.

Good Luck.

OUCH !

The tennis has been painful this morning ! Looked very good for a while.

Alicia Molik took the first set and had break points early in the second, before running out of steam, against Patty Schnyder.

Robby Ginepri lost in a first set tie breaker and then served for the second, having set points, before eventually losing in straight sets, we only needed him to take one !

Feels a bit like running up, the down escalator at present, win one, lose one, win two, lose two, VERY frustrating.

With regard to the NFL, I have written all my notes, it is just a matter of typing them out, that is always the tough part, especially with my two fingered typing skills.

Think I will get the afternoon football out of the way first, two more bets, the first of which will be online at about 13.30 cet.

Please check back.

DONCASTER ROVERS - SCUNTHORPE UNITED

Rovers have one of the strongest squads in Division 1 and are finally fulfilling their potential.

After a slow start to the campaign, they brought in Sean O'Driscoll as manager and he has masterminded their climb up the table. They now stand just 3 points off a playoff spot and 9 points off the league leaders, Scunthorpe, who visit the Keepmoat Stadium today, with 2 games in hand.

Rovers have won 8 of their last 9, scoring 18 goals and keeping 8 clean sheets. There is incredible competition for places at the moment, several long term injured players have all returned to fitness together, lightning fast Jonathan Forte, has extended his loan period until the end of the season and Gareth Roberts returns after a ban.

The visitors have drawn their last 3 and have problems today. Top scorer Billy Sharp and Cliff Byrne are suspended and two other regulars are injured, three of these would be amongst the first names on the teamsheet and will be sorely missed. They have taken striker, Jermaine Beckford, on loan from Leeds United and he is likely to start this afternoon.

I will side with Rovers to close the gap, at the top of a very congested, League 1.

Good Luck.
